Food and Drink

Eat, drink and be merry. Quite right.

Food, particularly preserved foods would have been extensively traded on the fairgrounds. Certain sweets became associated with individual feasts and were sold not only as food but also as charms. Speciality drinks, perhaps iced, perhaps alcoholic were sold and consumed either to cool the head or inflame the passions.

Fairs are inconceivable without lots of snacks and drinks. This old Roman drawing shows a booth where fried food is served.

It’s not quite clear what they are frying at this Italian fair but it sure causes a pall of smoke.

The Dutch painter Hendrik Gerrit Ten Cate (1803-1856) captured this kermis in Haarlem. Everybody on this tableau is having a good time.
